On our senior class trip, we took school buses to the Michigan Central Railroad Station, where we took the train to Chicago. There we boarded our ship, the S.S. South American to Mackinac Island, then through the locks and back to Detroit. Here are some memories.

Fred Courville poses in front of the John Shedd Aquarium.

Doors to typical staterooms.

Typical stateroom - definitely not a Princess or Holland American ship!

Chicago skyline from the ship.

Navy Pier in view as we depart from the dock.

Dredges in the harbor area.

Dredges and channel marker as we leave Chicago.

Approaching Mackinac Island with its Grand Hotel.

View from the dock toward the Island Harbor and our ship at the dock, the one on the left.

The Captain's dinner: l. to r. Bev Copel, Hanns Kristen, Ray Schumaker and Larry Hedlund.

The "grand" Grand Ballroom, gathering place for dancing and entertainment, including talent show which included Jim Apsney's rendition of Andy Griffith's soliloquy about his big "arnge" drink and football.

Relaxing on board are Dave Ferger, Tom Spooner, Carol Starkey, Bill Mueller and Gordon Hart.

Dave Ortner and Ted Bloom took a dip, a possibly unauthorized dip? It had to be cold, since the water that far north in May and June is not that distant from being frozen!

From the porch of the Grand Hotel (free to walk on it back then - the good old days, remember) one could view the not yet filled pool where Esther Williams swam for a movie.

Arch rock on the eastern side of the island, a short bicycle ride from the town.

Departing Mackinac Island with its stone-walled ramp to the fort and waterside hotel.

Passing a down bound ship as we sailed toward the Soo Locks.

Heading toward the locks.

Getting closer.

The lock is in sight.

Almost there.

In the lock.

Almost full.

The lock opens and we proceed into the higher waters of the St. Mary's River and Lake Superior.

Into the lock on the return trip.

One of the Customs houses.

Our worthy captain or mate oversees our voyage.

Lock side scene.

Water almost down and we will proceed out of the lock into the Lake Huron waters.

Other ships awaiting turns in the larger locks.

Many Ships in the area.

Relaxing on the foredeck are Ray Schumaker, Bev Copeland, Larry Hedlund, Ebba Johnson and Hanns Kristen.

Refueling south of Sarnia.

Cruisers on deck include Mary Lou Lake, Mr. Robert Hall and his wife, Larry Hedlund and Mrs. Kramer's husband.

Evening fun on deck. Poker partygoers include l. to r. Ted Bloom with Ray Schumaker behind him, Fred Courville, Larry Hedlund, Hanns Kristen with Joe Anish behind him, Bev Copeland with ? behind her, Gloria Really, Mary Ann Stellman with Mrs. Jean Kramer infront of her, Dave Ferger, Bill Mueller and Carol Starkey. The two young men in the right background may have been from another school, they are
??s.

Same gathering, different view includes Hanns Kristen's profile, Gloria Really, Mary Ann Stellman and  ? standing. Foreground is Ray Schumaker, followed l. to r. Dave Ferger, Carol Starkey, Jean Kramer, Bill Mueller and the back of Fred Courville. (And kids today think playing cards is new because of television!! Hah!)

A last sunset.

Returning home to the Detroit skyline.

Arrival back at the school. A very memorable trip.
(Does anyone besides Ellen remember "lummy sticks" and the crew coming to check out the strange pounding noises coming from the deck?)

Cruise ticket.
